ABOUT
Ambas was created and established in 2002 by Sophie Galeras y Mollinedo which settled in Rome after living in London, Geneva, New York and Paris. Following her dreams and inspirations a “beachwear” collection took shape in 2004, having fabric as the protagonist of the story. The original idea being to play around with organic cotton gauze - a simple noble material and produce a different kind of beachwear that would evoke fond memories. Charme and potential of gauze were lightness, transparency, the gentle feel of a natural organic handmade fabric, woven and dyed since thousands of years in the East and the Mediterranean. All this being also a heritage that needed to be enhanced and preserved. At the same time cotton gauze can be quietly glamorous, while being of a limitless natural elegance.
Constant inspiration is also the American simplicity represented by Jacqueline and Lee Bouvier in the Sixties. With them fashion became streamlined, feminine with no drama, for an international, travelling woman, subtle and sophisticated. The fun working with cotton gauze led her to create cashmere gauze shawls of impalpable warmth. Both these materials are now handwoven and dyed exclusively for Ambas and their potential seems to grow at every season. Bathing suits in Italian light velvety lycra with a touch of glamour chic have naturally joined the collection.
